Question by greg: what is a dedicated server for video games?
i have been hearing a lot of talk about bringing back something called a dedicated server to Modern warfare 2. i have also heard that COD4 used a dedicated server, but if it did, then i like the modern warfare 2 servers better because you don’t time out all the time. can someone please explain to me what a dedicated server is, and how it is compared to another server like the one currently in use by Modern Warfare 2. thanks for all the help!

a dedicated server is one that runs at all times, has no down time, and has least lag.
dedicated servers don’t host all of the consoles on one.

Dedicated servers are most often housed in data centers, similar to colocation facilities, providing redundant power sources and HVAC systems. In contrast to colocation, the server hardware is owned by the provider and in some cases they will provide support for your operating system or applications.

How much are they? The ones that big video hosting companies use like youtube.com justin.tv veoh.com dailymotion.com? Do they run them themselves or do they buy it off a company?

Once you become the caliber of Youtube and Justin.tv, you need many (as in hundreds or a few thousand) dedicated servers. Most startups rent one or two dedicated servers at first until it takes off. After which point the startup rents what we call a data center “cage” or builds its own facility to host as many dedicated servers as they need. Needless to say that we never hear of startups that only have one dedicated server because they have most likely failed to attract interest for one reason or the other.

We’ve had customers that started out with one dedicated server and have grown bigger over time. You could technically buy a server from Dell, subscribe to a business grade internet connection, and set up shop in your home office. But the likelihood of this setup succeeding is very slim. The reason being home offices are not reliable in terms of power and infrastructure and cannot sustain high traffic periods. It’s best to start up on good footing and rent a dedicated server from a reputable provider. Starting small is always a good thing. You’re shedding the least amount of money and have time to flesh out your growth plan.
